We all lead busy lives and when we we are ready to sleep we are often in a situation where the ideal environment does not exist for sleep. This leads to difficulty falling asleep and eventually over many nights there is an increase in the "anxiety" associated with falling asleep. You will find that you start worrying about not being able to fall asleep and this becomes a vicous cycle and without the right changes in behavior it only gets worse. 

Other factors can contribute to difficulties with staying asleep. Often underlying sleep disorders are factors.
