What Is a Home Sleep Test?
A home sleep test is a simplified version of a sleep study used to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Instead of staying overnight in a lab, you'll use a portable device that monitors key functions while you sleep in your own bed.
This device typically tracks your airflow, breathing effort, oxygen levels, and heart rate. It's small, lightweight, and easy to set up, with instructions provided by your sleep specialist or technologist.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Home Testing?
Home sleep testing is best suited for individuals with a high likelihood of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea and no other major sleep disorders. If you snore, wake up gasping, feel tired during the day, or have been told you stop breathing at night, this test may be appropriate.
However, people with complex conditions like central sleep apnea, narcolepsy, or parasomnias may still require an in-lab study for accurate diagnosis.
How Do I Prepare for the Test?
Once your doctor determines that home testing is appropriate, our staff will provide you with the equipment and a detailed guide. The setup usually involves wearing a belt around your chest, a nasal cannula, and a fingertip sensor. Depending on your provider's recommendation, you'll use the device for one to two nights and return it to our office for analysis.
What Happens After the Test?
After you return the device, our technologists will review the data collected. Your physician will interpret the results and contact you to discuss the findings and next steps. If you are diagnosed with sleep apnea, we will recommend appropriate treatment options, such as CPAP therapy or Inspire therapy, depending on your needs.
Is It as Accurate as an In-Lab Sleep Study?
While a home sleep test is a reliable tool for diagnosing OSA, it does not capture the full range of data available through an in-lab study. It may not detect other types of sleep disorders or provide as comprehensive a view of your sleep architecture.
If your test results are inconclusive or if your symptoms suggest more complex issues, your provider may recommend a follow-up in-lab study.
