People talk during sleep for many reason - stress, sleep deprivation, alcohol consumption and excessive daytime sleepiness are just a few of the reasons behind this occurrence. Sleep talking, formally known as somniloquy, can involve anything from a complicated dialogue to complete incoherent mumbling. While some individuals might find these ramblings amusing or embarrassing it is important to remember that sleep talking could be the result of a more serious condition such as sleep apnea.
Sleep talking per se is not extremely dangerous, but it can potentially keep your bed partner up during the night. The good news is that for most individuals it is a rare and transient occurrence. The condition is much more common in males and children; however, anyone can experience sleep talking.
Sleep-talkers are not normally aware of their behaviors or speech; as a result, their voices and the type of language they use could sound different from their wakeful, normal speech. Somniloquy usually goes untreated but there may be an underlying, more serious medical reason for this behavior. Please contact your health care provider if you are concerned about sleep talking.
